Del Mar Summer Meet
Thursday, August 10, 2017
It’s a slow week at Del Mar as things get prepared for the showdown next weekend, but for now we have an 8 race card to sort through. Being a slow week we will focus on a few races and construct some horizontal wagers while also building some vertical plays. Let’s dive right in:
Race 1:
#5 Dynamic Scoring: Go ahead and cross out all the Turf and Synthetic races and the picture looks much better for this runner. Last time on dirt he won by 2 going away at Los Alamitos at a higher class level. Granted, these are now open foes, but a drop into this spot regardless. The prior start on dirt was at Santa Anita also at a tougher level and he finished a respectable 3rd. Now, I know the margin is 18 lengths, but the winner freaked and won by 12 ½ going away. He is a much better horse on dirt so not quite sure why he was racing exclusively on Turf all year long. It is nice to see the bug boy stick around as he was on board when he won last time out. Distance should not be a problem either as he has had 3 starts at this trip with 2 wins and 1 third. All systems go for this guy so let’s hope we get something near the morning line of 5/2.
Race 2:
#1 Warm Endowment: I love that Prat takes the call on this filly as the last two times this gal had her picture taken it was with Prat on board. With speed signed on for this race it’s great to see that this gal’s style is adaptable and she can lay close to the pace or sit back and make one run. This filly is dropping in class and I am expecting her return from a short rest to be a winning move. Another 5/2 morning line shot, but expect this runner to be around 3-1 or 4-1 with a lot of the action going to this gals neighbor in the starting gate (#2). (Best Bet)
Race 3:
#12 Flash Henry: Another drop in class is concerning for this runner but we fall into a more realistic spot and get Martin Garcia back on board. This colt was training lights out before his last start and paid the price as he went too fast too quickly and paid the price. Last workout was on the positive side and gets another shot on this surface with ample speed to his inside. Hopefully Martin can guide this colt to the inside quickly as the speed bolts out and tucks in behind them and mows them down late at 8-1.

Race 5:
#7 Trinitys Turn: Last year she was going very well and would have been one of the favorites in this race, but then she was dropped and claimed and it went downhill fast. She was put on a sprint race, which is not where she wants to be, and he finished 7th. She was stretched out last time out at a bit higher level and made up significant ground despite relatively slow fractions in front of her. Vergara sticks with this filly and got to know her last time out. I expect the inside runners to set a solid clip creating a perfect storm where this gal plods home in the stretch. She’s 12-1 on the morning line so I am willing to stick with her and find out if she can get back to where she was last year.
Race 7:
#3 Coils Gold: His sire was one of my favorites so I am a bit biased in this choice, but there is some talent under the hood here regardless. This colt won his debut locally and did it emphatically, so much so that he was thrown into a stakes race next start out. There are some excuses for this runner as in his second start he was off slowly and was not able to recover and his next start after that he hopped in the air and blew all chances. With a clean start I suspect this runner will sit just off the fast pace (workouts aren’t typical Baffert blazing workouts) and make a charge on the inside.
Race 8:
#3 Speakers: What happened last time out? She did not pick up her feet at all and burned some serious money in that event. To our benefit several of those runners come back assuring us a good price on this filly. She switches to Prat for this attempt and as I’ve mentioned all meet long #Prateffect! A rebound to her debut start would surely put her in the mix. She got a better post this time out where she can sit behind on the second flight and burst home turning for home.
