Santa Anita Autumn Meet
October 6, 2017
Yesterday was a brutal day for many of us. The day started off with a $44 winner and upsets continued throughout the day. The pick-5 paid a whopping $80,143 and the early pick-4 paid $11,502.75. There were only three single digit winners throughout the day and none of them were the post time favorites. It was intense for those that were having luck; unfortunately we had an off day. We try to regroup and attack the huge pick-6 double carryover. Today’s pool should surpass the million dollar threshold. Being that tomorrow is a big day for racing with the Sprint Championship I suspect that the pick-6 wills carryover once again with some big prices along the way. With that in mind, we will look for some hidden bombers that could blow up the tote board. Let’s go ahead and get started with today’s card:
Race 1:
#1 Where’s the D: Evin Roman had quite the day opening the day with a $44 winner and finishing the day with a $9 winner and in between won 2 additional races. I suspect he will continue his hot streak and guide this filly to a victory in the opener. This runner is dropping in class after finishing 4th at Los Alamitos and also a 4th at Del Mar. Those races appear to be excusable as the day time oval at Los Alamitos is unkind to wide runs and this filly was about 4-5 wide turning for home. Del Mar was a deep tiring track where closers weren’t able to circle fields. Turn back to the Santa Anita races and you see a solid 2nd place finish at a much higher level and a trouncing of her foes for slightly cheaper. She should get solid pace to run into and if she can avoid getting shuffled far back she could make the final run from the inside.
#10 Herunbridledpower: That last race was superb. She broke fast, cleared from the outside and widened to a 6 length victory. It was against lesser but the way she did it warrants a small hike back to the claiming price 2 back. Her effort two back is what is providing the nice morning line price of 4-1 as she was beaten by Southern Treasure (5) and Nazareth (6) as the favorite in the race. That race was a little further than she wanted to go and was fighting from the sound of the bell and held on gamely to be edged out of 3rd. This race, although it shows some speed, does not appear to pose the same challenge as the other runners don’t possess the same type of speed as this filly. She can clear from the outside and try to wire them.
Race 2:
#8 Twirling Apples: First time grass for Peter eurton for a sire that gets about 17% first time turf winners. She is dropping in class for this first spin and from the middle of the field should be able to get a good stalking trip just off the pace.
#13 Arrowsphere: Our original selection #3 scratched out of the event but drew in the second Peter Eurton runner. I feel that he holds the aces in this event with a solid speed horse that is shortening up after 2 route attempts and gets a major jock upgrade and our top selection who I think will sit off the pace and make one run. This runner is also dropping in class and has some races to look back to that put her in the thick of things. Let’s hope we can get anything near the morning line odds on either of the two selections.
Race 3:
#7 Dressed in Prada: This filly dropped her jockey in her last attempt and didn’t get a chance to show what she could do so we only have her first attempt to go by but that attempt would be enough to put her in the hunt in this race. She finished a fast closing second in a race where the third place finisher returned to win her next race. There appears to be ample speed in this event which should enhance her late kick from the outside. Pena has been a solid jock, when he gets opportunities, and at 6-1 I am hoping we can get her in the winner’s circle to start off the pick-6 with a mild upset.
#2 Bona Fide Image: this runner had some solid races during the spring meet at Santa Anita but was not able to seal the deal at short odds in several attempts. Doesn’t bode for confidence, but she has shows an affinity for the track which is a big advantage. Pedroza sticks around and just like our top selection should be sitting just off the pace and could pick up the leaders once they begin to tire out.
Race 4:
#3 Princess Dorian: Feels like Eurton is going to have a good day today. This runner returns to her preferred track after a dismal run at Del Mar. Her three starts over the Santa Anita dirt track were told with 1 victory and 2 seconds. She faced a few that return in this spot but Del Mar is an odd track and perhaps she didn’t care for it. I am willing to dismiss that effort and try her back at better odds.
#6 Awesometastic: Solid races in the east coast but now gets moved to the Baltas barn and brought over to the great race place. The work outs don’t get the blood pumping but her style of racing should bode well for her as she is able to sit back just off the pace and pass horses. That is something many of the runners in here haven’t been able to do or haven’t been asked to do. There is enough speed to bolster her late kick and she will be able to sit comfortably from the outside and see the action unfold.
Race 6:
#3 Thorpe d’Oro: This race lacks speed so this one should have no trouble clearing the field and setting the tempo. If he can avoid a pace battle with the favorite from the inside Captivate, she may be able to take them all the way. Her debut race puts her in the mix for the win end.
Race 7:
#5 Ms Wakaya: She faced some tough foes in three consecutive efforts to no avail then was dropped into a more reasonable spot and finished 3rd on grass. She switches back to the dirt where she broke her maiden and on a track she likes. Like the fact that Bejerano takes the call and with some runners that need the lead in this race lined up, perhaps she can sit back and blow by them turning for home.
#9 Dreamy Gal: From the front end speed I like this gal as she can sit from her outside slot and flank the inside speed and move on if shes good enough. She will try the santa anita course for the first time but has trained on it very well. Could make amends for her flop as the chalk LTO at a healthier price
Race 8:
#4 Moon Kitty: Desormeaux sticks around to ride the final race is a big sign of confidence for me. This runner broke her maiden on dirt but has done well on the turf before. She finished 4th to Chocolate Coated (2) on this strip in April after setting a fast pace. She appears to be the controlling speed of the field and there isn’t a better rider on the turf than the Rajun Cajun in this race. We should get every bit of that 8-1 morning line to find out if she can turn the table on Chocolate Coated.
#11: Robin’s Love: Honestly not sure why I am drawn to this runner as she had to go up north to win on Tapeta after not being able to do so here, but I like that Tyler sticks around and shows faith for this gal. She also has a lot of early speed, but from the outside slot perhaps Tyler will let her settle and get position as they turn into the crossover before unleashing her. Surprise package.
